Sharjah, 1 November 2017: 1001 Inventions in partnership with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) introduced at the Sharjah International Book Fair the Arabic version of the Children’s Book “Ibn Al-Haytham: The Man Who Discovered How We See”.

The book, which was originally published by National Geographic Kids and 1001 Inventions in 2016 in the English language, is a tribute to 11th century pioneering Arab scientific thinker Al-Hassan Ibn Al-Haytham, and is part of a global educational campaign launched by 1001 Inventions in partnership with UNESCO in 2015 that has since then engaged with more than 35 million people around the world through its highly engaging components.

The presentation of the book at SIBF is accompanied by screenings of the short film “1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham” for children visiting on organised school visits. The partly-animated highly engaging cinematic experience was the last work of legendary actor Omar Sharif, and comes with a music score composed by internationally-acclaimed artist Sami Yusuf.

Considered by many as the ‘Father of Optics”, Ibn al-Haytham made important contributions to the understanding of vision, optics and light. His methodology of investigation shows certain similarities to what later became known as the modern scientific method. Ibn al-Haytham revolutionised science and his life serves as an inspiration to young people all over the world. He lived during a golden age of discovery and creativity in Muslim Civilisation where men and women of different faiths and cultures achieved breakthroughs that influence our world today.

Through the Ibn Al-Haytham campaign, which comprises in addition to this first-of-its-kind book and the short feature film, of interactive exhibits, engaging science-based workshops and live shows, art gallery and educational materials; 1001 Inventions aims to inspire children and young people and equip them with a mind-set that enables them to build a better future.

By presenting this book in the Arabic language, 1001 Inventions and KFAS aspire to encourage young Arab speakers to acquire scientific knowledge in their mother tongue which is a crucial cornerstone in the process of building a scientifically minded generation in the Arab world.

The English language of the book was introduced in the UAE by 1001 Inventions at ADIBF 2016.

1001 Inventions led tribute events for Ibn Al-Haytham at UNESCO in Paris, United Nations in New York, Royal Society in London with Prince Andrew Duke of York, Berlin Science Week and in more than 10 other cities around the world.

Families can obtain copies of the book and engage with hands-on activities at the KFAS stand at Sharjah Book Fair (hall 4) until 11 November from 9am to 10pm.
